The Star Spangled Banner: The Story & the Song (K-3)
     
 

Overview
The flag is one of our nation's most important symbols and is the central character of our national anthem. This project* introduces students to the key historical events that led to the creation of this important song, helping them to learn the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner and expand their overall understanding of our nation's history.


To complete the project students will . . .
  1. learn about key historical events that led to the creation of our national anthem through a multimedia presentation.
  2. learn about different types of primary sources and reflect on their value.
  3. learn the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner with the assistance of a primary-source, multimedia presentation.
  4. reinforce their understanding of the flag and the song's lyrics by coloring illustrations of U.S. flags and the song lyrics.
 
     
     
  Teacher Project Materials

NOTE: To view the multimedia presentations (.wmv files), you will need the appropriate free version of Microsoft Windows Media Player®. To view the Microsoft PowerPoint® presentation (.ppt file), you will need that software or the free PowerPoint reader. Because these are extremely large files; we recommend that you download the files rather than viewing them online.


When downloading the files, PC users will right click the links and Mac users will hold down the Command/Apple key and click the links.

Internet Explorer: Click the link and click Save Target As. Select the appropriate location and click the Save button.

Netscape: Click the link and click Save Link Target As. Select the appropriate location and click the Save button.

Safari: Click the link and click Download Linked File. Select the appropriate location and click the Save button.
