Photos & Perspectives of the Civil War
Travel back in time to report on the war
Introduction
You have been transported back in time to the Civil War era (1861-1865). You are a news reporter for one of
the following newspapers: Gettsyburg Gazette, Antietam News, Petersburg Monthly, Richmond Reporter, or the
Appomattox Free Press. You and three other journalists have been assigned to report on the status of the war.
Collectively, you will publish this month's war feature.
People in the News section gives you a chance to write about feature article on
one or two important individuals. You will be selecting one or two people from the list of editors
that has a "slant" based on the perspective of your hometown newspaper. Before you write your feature article,
you will need to do some research (the Resources section will help get you started).
Lifestyle section will give you an opportunity to write a feature article reporting on the lives of soldiers during the Civil War.
You will be selecting two categories listed and write a 250-300-word article that captures the viewpoint/perspective of your hometown

You are a war correspondent and you will be assigned to write a 250-300-word news article reporting on one of the battles.

African American Soldiers section will provide you an opportunity to write a 250-300-word feature article on the involvement of
African Americans in the war, who were allowed to fight for the United States Army for the first time. Although they were soldiers,
African Americans were placed in segregated units that saw little combat; they also did not have the same benefits of as white soldiers.
