Learning @ the Source Free Professional Devleopment
Explore the digital world of the Library of Congress and get strategies for incorporating primary sources into your curriculum to strengthen critical thinking skills through inquiry-based learning.

Learning @ the Source is an opportunity for educators to explore the Library of Congress’ online collection of over 13 million digitized primary sources, including documents, images, maps, audio, and video. This customized program, designed by teachers for teachers, allows participants to:.
  • Learn to navigate multiple sections of the Library of Congress website.
  • Strengthen information literacy and digital media skills.
  • Delve into subject-area content and best practices for inquiry learning.
  • Experience the value of primary sources for engaging students and enhancing critical thinking skills.
  • Understand how to use primary source learning to develop and reinforce English Language Arts skills required by the Common Core State Standards.
  • Return to the classroom energized amd armed with strategies and a USB drive loaded with resources.

 

Professional Development Option 1
10 hours of onsite instruction delivered by Barat trainers at your location

Professional Development Option 2
Blended instruction, 2-4 hours of online instruction combined with 6 hours of onsite instruction

Both options introduce participants to the Library of Congress website, demonstrating why and how they can use primary sources to engage students and enhance learning. Participants learn how to search the Library’s website to locate what they need; get hands-on practice with cross-curricular, inquiry-based learning strategies; and receive guidance in creating a primary-source learning experience for students. Participants receive CPDUs or can earn 3 Master credits.

Sustained Resource Program
Partner with TPS-Barat to develop a training program for resource professionals at your school to provide ongoing support of primary-source learning and Library of Congress resources.
Cicero: American Government & Constitution
Improve student understanding and recall of core concepts of American government and the U.S. Constitution with an interactive, question-and-answer learning game. These online learning modules can also be used to identify student knowledge gaps and create customized Constitution exams.
